Fulton County-Palmetto Crescent Park
The Conservation Fund, in partnership with The Chattahoochee Hill Country, purchased this 103 acre property on the southeastern edge of the Chattahoochee Hill Country in March of 2003, saving it from impending subdivision development. This property, located south of Hutcheson Ferry Road at the intersection of Hutcheson Ferry and Gravel Roads, is comprised of rolling hills, pastureland and stunning granite outcrops, and includes the headwaters of the Cedar Creek watershed.
A developer had already placed a contract on the property with plans to subdivide it into small lots of 75 single family homes. Working with the Conservation Fund, CHC was able to place a back up contract on the property. When the developer asked the seller for an extension on the contract, the seller opted to sell the property for conservation purposes instead.
The Conservation Fund provided the funds from their revolving fund to close the sale on our behalf, while we sought permanent funding. In September of 2003, Fulton County agreed to purchase the property as a passive recreation park.
Our long term plan is that this park will serve as the trailhead for our four-county bike and pedestrian path, and as an anchor in the Chattahoochee Hill Country Regional Greenway System. Commissioner Bill Edwards of Fulton County has announced his attention to hold an Annual Fall Arts Festival on the property to benefit the local community. In addition to CHC’s involvement in planning the trail and working with Fulton County on an annual arts festival, we are working on creation of a local volunteer group to support park design and maintenance.
Chattahoochee Hill Country residents celebrated a Fall Festival with food by local charities. An Annual Arts Festival will be held at the new passive recreational park to benefit South Fulton residents.
